What to Wear This Autumn
Four outfits for layering season — texture, mid-weight knits and boots that earn their keep.

Autumn is the season where layering finally makes sense again. After months of choosing the lightest option, you get to add texture — a shirt under a sweater, a belted jacket over denim, boots that ground a maxi skirt. The trick is mid-weight pieces that stack without bulk.
The four looks below use camel, chocolate, cream and black in proportions that read autumn without feeling heavy. Each one handles a temperature drop: swap flat sandals for ankle boots, add a jacket over a dress, layer a shirt under a knit.

1. Plaid maxi and turtleneck
The city autumn default. A cream ribbed turtleneck tucked into a camel-and-chocolate plaid maxi skirt, with black pointed ankle boots and a structured leather bag. The skirt moves; the turtleneck keeps the neck warm without a scarf.
- Top
- Cream ribbed turtleneck, tucked
- Skirt
- Camel plaid A-line maxi skirt
- Shoes
- Black pointed ankle boots
- Bag
- Structured black leather top-handle
Why it works — Plaid reads autumn immediately. A maxi length balances bare ankles in boots; a fitted turtleneck keeps the silhouette clean under a full skirt.

2. Belted jacket and wide denim
Elevated casual for coffee meetings and gallery afternoons. A chocolate belted wrap jacket over a white tee, with medium-wash wide-leg jeans, brown loafers and a woven crossbody bag.
- Jacket
- Chocolate belted wrap jacket
- Base
- White fitted tee
- Denim
- Medium-wash wide-leg jeans
- Shoes
- Dark brown leather loafers
- Bag
- Woven straw crossbody with leather trim
Why it works — A belted jacket gives structure without a full coat. Wide denim balances the volume of the jacket; earth tones keep the look cohesive.

3. Layered shirt and wide trousers
Office-ready without a blazer. A black crew-neck sweater over a cream ribbed shirt with the collar and cuffs showing, tan wide-leg trousers with a brown leather belt and black kitten heels.
- Layer
- Black crew-neck sweater
- Shirt
- Cream ribbed shirt, collar and cuffs visible
- Trousers
- Tan wide-leg trousers with leather belt
- Shoes
- Black pointed kitten heels
Why it works — A shirt under a knit is the easiest autumn layering move. Wide trousers in tan break up black-on-black; kitten heels keep the line sharp without heavy boots.

4. Corset vest and wide trousers
Evening or a dressed-up office day. A white silk blouse with a black corset-style vest layered over the top, wide black tailored trousers and pointed pumps. A long neck tie adds movement without another layer.
- Blouse
- White silk blouse with long neck tie
- Vest
- Black structured corset-style vest
- Trousers
- Black wide-leg tailored trousers
- Shoes
- Black pointed pumps
Why it works — A corset vest over a blouse gives shape without a jacket. All-black below anchors a detailed top half; the neck tie replaces jewellery.
Three rules that cover most of autumn
- Layer thin to thick — shirt, then knit, then jacket — so you can remove one piece as the day warms.
- Favour camel, chocolate, cream and deep green over bright pastels until the clocks change.
- One pair of ankle boots and one belted jacket cover most of September through November.
